Elegance is now on display at the Wild Side Gallery at the Phoenix Zoo. I am honored that they announced that it won Best of Show! Although it appears in black and white, it was actually created with only one black colored pencil, solvent, and a variety of erasers on Grafix 2-sided matte drafting film. A heart-warmed thanks go to the judges, Christi Manuelito of Bonner David Galleries in Scottsdale and Frank Gonzales of the Mesa Art Center.

The Heart of Ukraine just won Best of Show at the Arizona Arists Guild Statewide Exhibition. This 36x48 mixed media piece captured the hearts of the judges and brought many questions as to what it was made out of. It is always delightful to tell people that it is created mostly with colored pencil and a little wax pastel. This piece is drawn onto Grafix 2-sided matte drafting film and then adhered onto a wooden cradled panel that gives it the look of a contemporary oil painting. In fact, that is exactly what many people think I used!
My model was my Ukrainian neighbor, Zlotta. Ever since I met her, I wanted to draw her. Together we planned the piece. Her mother brought the dress and jewelry all the way to the U.S. from Ukraine during the war. I made the headdress for her to wear during the photoshoot. I wanted to make the image as authentic as possible. The funny thing is that the headress was so heavy that her husband had to hold it up from behind so that it wouldn't fall off.
Color Runs Through My Veins is currently on display at Brookgreen Gardens in South Carolina at the American Women Artists Exhibit called Pushing Forward Reaching Back. Hats off to all of the amazing women artists that share the show with me. Thank you to the judges that gave it the 2-D Award.
